Prosperity of any country depends upon the large scale industrialisation of its resources. To develop this industrialisation standardisation is an obvious pre-requisite. Standardisation in our country may be said to have commenced when an Inspector of Local manufacturers was appointed by the Railway Board in 1909 at Calcutta to encourage the purchase of the products of local industries for railways.
